The Letter Page!

So, my letter page is finally complete also! It's a bit different from the first one, but I like the color palette a lot better, and I definitely improved on craftsmanship. I'll upload both pictures so you can comment here on both of them.

Oh, I should also add that, save for the gold, the pieces were done with ink, calligraphy pens, and brushes. The first piece's gold parts were done with a gold leaf marker and gold acrylic paint. The second one was a mixture between yellow ink and gold paint.

I'll upload higher res pictures later, but for now these'll do the trick.

  1. I really like the personality put into these pieces. I think the mixing of the two styles turned out really nicely. It's like you took influence especially of the layouts of the book of Kells, streamlined it, and made it your own. Good job

  2. Thomas - This is one of my favorite manuscripts. You covered all o the required elements while maintaining a very personal flair. My only criticism is that, compared to the books we have looked at in class like the Book of Durrow or the book of Kells, it is not very full or detailed. I am glad there is a grey texture there to occupy the negative space, but I would have liked to see a bit more. But again, props for taking this assignment and making it your own.

  3. This is very much your piece, it looks very cool, and I love the color palette. Your zoomorphic shape is also awesome.

The most noticeable thing that you did at first glance is the combination of organic and geometric form, as well as knot work, making the pages very celtic. The use of gold, red, blue, and green makes it very illumination-like as well, and the gold paint/ink was a cool addition that no one else implemented (I think). I also think the colors on the second page look better, and the text looks very celtic as well. Great job!

  4. I really liked your manuscript and that you used gold in them. I thought that the robot twist on it was creative and made it have a lot of personality. The color palette that you used looks authentic. Your shapes remind me of this.. http://www.art-imagery.com/images/kells_f253v_A.jpg

  5. Oh, hello dear! As you already know, I like yours quite a lot. It's super unique and so very you. I love the way you took the traditional elements and turned them into robotic/mechanical elements. The key patterns become circuit-boards, the knotwork becomes wires, circular knots become gears, etc. Your color palette is really interesting too, and I love the robot. I still wish you would have used the giant curvy robot you drew, but your super cool capital makes up for it. I do kind of wish there was more stuff on there too, mostly because I saw your concept sketches and liked them a ton. Maybe I'll just push you to do more of these. ;)
